Did Jesus Actually Claim to Be God?

QuestionMarksIf we’re going to discuss somebody today, wouldn’t we first interview that person to see what he claimed about himself? There are a lot of opinions of Jesus throughout culture today, but did Jesus himself actually claim to be God?

During one seminary class, I asked myself the same question and set out to research this topic. What I found was astounding. Now, I admit that my research was limited, and it could contain error in the specific total numbers, but even if I was off by 15 verses, the results are still overwhelming! Be encouraged that Christ truly claimed to be God, and the people during his time knew what He was claiming because that Christ was crucified for His claim to be God (For example, John 5:18 states, “This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God). See my results below:

  • Gospels contain 3779 verses.
  • 1948 (51.5%) contain the words of Christ.
  • 450 (23.1% of words 11.9% of Gospels) verses contain Christ’s own claims of deity (234 claims in the book of John).

Breaking Down the Proof
Would you befriend a guy who claimed to be God almost 25% of everything he said?
Hey Joe, want to go to the gym?
Sure, first let me get changed. Hey, maybe afterward we can go to Chipotle. Just so you know, I’m God. So what time do you want to go?
Would you date someone who claimed to be God with 25% of everything he or she said?
Would you hire such a person?
I find it interesting that people think of Jesus as a good man or a great teacher, but they don’t find issue with not believing him to be God. C.S. Lewis has pointed out that the claims and actions of Christ are so extreme, we must take Christ to be a liar, lunatic, or Lord. I believe that the verses we’ve looked at today demonstrate that Jesus truly was Lord!
Do you see Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life?

  1. This is a great post, there is truly no doubt that Jesus did claim to be God. I think it is pretty incredible that we can even see how Jesus is God in the Old Testament. Daniel 7:13-14 says “He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” Daniel is speaking of Jesus. Also, even during creation we see evidence of Jesus as part of the trinity. God said “let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness.” Jesus truly was and is God. Thanks for the post!
